Boholanos Protest Panglao Reclamation Project

A huge crowd of protestors went to the streets yesterday to drumbeat their strong objection on the controversial proposal to do an off-shore reclamation project in the tourists' haven of Bohol.
By Bohol Chronicle

Some 2000 protesters echoed their voices to firm up their indignation to those behind the project which is a "landmark of environmental destruction" in Panglao.

According to the objectors, the reclamation will destroy an already fragile marine ecosystem and pose serious threats to the biodiversity of the area.

The protesters assemble at the Plaza fronting the Capitiol as some of their leaders took turns in urging provincial officials to reject and recall all plans to reclaim land in Panglao.

The project's opposition has gained support from various groups, including environmental lawyers who vowed to raise the matter to the courts.

Former Panglao mayor Dr. Doloreich Dumaluan said he is optimistic any plans to reclaim Panglao Bay would not push through as this will never get social approval.

Former OIC governor Atty. Victor de la Serna was among those who committed to back the oppositors who have organized themselves as Panglaoanons Against Reclamation (Pare).

Antonio Ong Guat, the founder of Bohol Quality Store

From Sunday Post   I pay my sincerest condolences to Antonio Ong Guat, the founder of Bohol Quality Store . My family especially my late Mom owed a lot of gratitude to him. Little is known of the fact that my Mom as a school teacher, was making school teaching charts with her crude rubber printing set. I used to accompany her to Tagbilaran to buy her supplies at Bohol Quality Store, and bought her supplies direct from Ong Guat. Suki niya si Ong Guat to the point that he would attend to her when she goes to the store. In fact, nagpapautang pa siya ni Mom, which she paid when she sold her teaching materials to the new teachers. I suggest that the provincial and city governments should honor Ong Guat with a posthumous award in recognition of his efforts to be the founder of a business empire in Bohol, which has presently employed thousands of Boholanos presently. I think everybody agrees that his store sparked business to its fullest heights today. Fred Ong and his wife Babs Gonzaga we...

Politicking at Tagbilaran City Hall

By Jorge Cabalit Bohol Chronicle Some casual employees of the City Government complained that they were directed to secure the signatures of at least 20 registered voters in their localities. The act of compelling these casual employees to get the signatures of at least 20 registered voters is a violation of the Omnibus Election Code and the Code of Ethics for Public Officers and Employees. Until now, the committee on appropriation and accounts and personnel and reorganization of the Sangguniang Panlungsod of Tagbilaran, tasked to investigate these complaints, have not come out with the results of their investigation. The gathering of signatures by every casual employee will mean thousands of signatures of registered voters in the hands of the Office of the City Mayor. These signatures can easily be copied during the voting on election day. The gathering of some signatures would lend support to the allegations that some signatures of the voters in the ballots in the previous election...
