Aerial Survey of Bohol Province

  Heavy rains and low-ceiling clouds did not hamper the conduct of an aerial survey of Bohol that Gov. Erico Aumentado had arranged.

  Limitations imposed by meager resources prompted Aumentado to conduct the survey to determine which areas within three of Bohol's watersheds to prioritize for a joint rehabilitation project with ABS-CBN Foundation Inc.'s (AFI) environment arm Bantay Kalikasan.

  Having created recently a technical working group (TWG) to study the province's river basins to pick out sites suitable for more hydroelectric power, he asked the survey team to fly low over the Wahig-Inabanga River to assess the Cantakoy Falls in Danao town as well as other waterfalls along the Upper Abatan River and the Loboc River.

  The surface water of the Upper Abatan River will be tapped for the fresh water needs of Metro Tagbilaran – the city and 10 nearby towns including Dauis and Panglao.

  The Loboc River now powers the turbines of three mini hydroelectric plants: one in Tontonan in Barangay Gotozon in Loboc, another in Hanopol in Balilihan town and still another in Barangay Ewon in Sevilla town.

  The Wahig-Inabanga River, on the other hand, supports the Bohol Irrigation Project (BHIP) Stages 1 and 2.

  The survey also aimed to confirm the suitability of sites chosen earlier by the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP), formerly the National Transmission Corp. (TransCo), for its steel towers through which an overhead high tension 138-kilovolt transmission line will be stringed.

  The P1.4-billion 95-kilometer backbone from the Ubay substation to the Corella substation will improve the efficiency and reliability of power transmission in the province. Construction has started and is expected to be finished by December 2011.

From Sunday Post   I pay my sincerest condolences to Antonio Ong Guat, the founder of Bohol Quality Store . My family especially my late Mom owed a lot of gratitude to him. Little is known of the fact that my Mom as a school teacher, was making school teaching charts with her crude rubber printing set. I used to accompany her to Tagbilaran to buy her supplies at Bohol Quality Store, and bought her supplies direct from Ong Guat. Suki niya si Ong Guat to the point that he would attend to her when she goes to the store. In fact, nagpapautang pa siya ni Mom, which she paid when she sold her teaching materials to the new teachers. I suggest that the provincial and city governments should honor Ong Guat with a posthumous award in recognition of his efforts to be the founder of a business empire in Bohol, which has presently employed thousands of Boholanos presently. Bohol Environment Code: First in the Philippines

Bohol Environment Code of 1998 – mandated the Provincial Government to adopt all measures to actively share the responsibility of the National Government particularly DENR in securing the perpetual existence of all endemic plants in the province. Memorandum of Agreement –Sept. 16, 2002 – This MOA participated by the Provincial Government, the Department of Environmental and Natural Resources  (DENR), the Central Visayas State College of Agriculture, Forestry and Technology  (CVSCAFT) and the Soil and Water Conservation Foundation, Inc.  (SWCF), served as the basis for the establishment of an endemic forest nursery located in the heartland of Bohol to support the provincial programs aimed at enhancing the biodiversity of the province and particularly restoring its diminishing dipterocarps forest and preventing its extinction.
