Tourism and Travel Management Students of Holy Name University

In celebration of World Tourism Day 2008, the Tourism and Travel Management students of Holy Name University under the Tour 116 (Convention, Exhibition and Event Management) Class will spearhead an event for a cause, Sept. 22 to 27.

One of the highlights of the event is an eco-concert with Chinchin Gutierrez at the MetroCentre Hotel on Saturday to cap the celebration.  The dinner-concert "Go Green: I'm an Earth Saver" will awaken one's passion for the love of Mother Nature based on Gutierrez's album Uyayi: A Collection of Philippine Lullabies."  

Through a creative and highly entertaining combination of music, dance, theater and spirituality, she will relay an engaging and insightful message toward man's sacred duty to protect Mother Nature and Motherland and hopefully to imbibe in every person the advocacy to save the earth.

Under the theme, "Tourism Responding to the Challenge of Climate Change," the class coined the theme "Where Have All the Fireflies Gone?"  The series of activities lined up is aimed at providing the students and the community a venue for information and awareness on Mother Nature leading to a broader outlook and a deeper understanding for environmental issues and sustainable development.

To kick off the week-long celebration, the class will go on a Firefly Tour in Loay town tomorrow. 
On Wednesday, the class will have a tree planting activity at the Sikatuna Tree Park.  An eco-fashion show dubbed as a "Fashion Show for Gaia: The Goddess of the Earth" at the Island City Mall on Friday will showcase garments and accessories made of indigenous or recycled materials in honor of Gaia the goddess of the earth.

The activity aims to develop awareness on how people can find new ways to recycle or create products by using indigenous materials and to enhance the creativity of the students through a fashion show.

From Sunday Post   I pay my sincerest condolences to Antonio Ong Guat, the founder of Bohol Quality Store . My family especially my late Mom owed a lot of gratitude to him. Little is known of the fact that my Mom as a school teacher, was making school teaching charts with her crude rubber printing set. I used to accompany her to Tagbilaran to buy her supplies at Bohol Quality Store, and bought her supplies direct from Ong Guat. Suki niya si Ong Guat to the point that he would attend to her when she goes to the store. In fact, nagpapautang pa siya ni Mom, which she paid when she sold her teaching materials to the new teachers. I suggest that the provincial and city governments should honor Ong Guat with a posthumous award in recognition of his efforts to be the founder of a business empire in Bohol, which has presently employed thousands of Boholanos presently. Bohol Environment Code: First in the Philippines

Bohol Environment Code of 1998 – mandated the Provincial Government to adopt all measures to actively share the responsibility of the National Government particularly DENR in securing the perpetual existence of all endemic plants in the province. Memorandum of Agreement –Sept. 16, 2002 – This MOA participated by the Provincial Government, the Department of Environmental and Natural Resources  (DENR), the Central Visayas State College of Agriculture, Forestry and Technology  (CVSCAFT) and the Soil and Water Conservation Foundation, Inc.  (SWCF), served as the basis for the establishment of an endemic forest nursery located in the heartland of Bohol to support the provincial programs aimed at enhancing the biodiversity of the province and particularly restoring its diminishing dipterocarps forest and preventing its extinction.
